Knowing More
About OD
"There is a growing theory and practice of something called 'organization development,' but most students, colleagues, and managers know relatively little about it. This quote from 1969 is what Richard Beckhard, Warren Bennis and Ed Schein (among the founders of the OD field) wrote in their common forward to the first six books in what became a series of almost 40 written about the OD field from 1969 to 1999. In this Session we'll look at the topics of about 30 of those books and see if we can construct a "map" of the territory of OD. It will build on the work we started in our December Session at Collaborative Labs. No need to study up, or to even have attended December's meeting, we'll review briefs of the books and see if we can populate a simple framework which will help us capture the work of the field of OD, and our neighbors in the areas that work to improve organizations.
Pre-Think
Think of the major influencers of your understanding of and interest in the field of OD. What piqued your interest? And what fed your curiosity? We'll start with then have a fun and engaging session, each adding value to our common understanding of what we do.
